Born in Lagos, Nigeria, the midfielder began his youth career with local side Nath Boys Academy, a Nigerian based football academy founded in 2010. After developing as a footballer for 5 years he was scouted and signed by Belgian Pro League club KRC Genk. He made his debut for the club in January 2015 against Charleroi in a 1-0 away defeat, he would make sporadic appearances in his debut season, trying to adjust to the climate and demands of a new country and league ending the season with 6 games to his name. His second season at the club would see him cement his position in the starting line up with 43 appearances in all completions with 4 goals to his name. His impressive performances caught the attention of then English champions Leicester City who signed the Nigerian midfielder in January 2017 for a reported fee of £17 million to replace the departing N'Golo Kante. He made his debut two days after signing for his new club in a 2-1win against Everton in the third round of the FA Cup, his Premier League debut would come in a 3-0 defeat Chelsea at home.
