Born in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, he began his football career playing for various teams from his home city eventually catching the eye Atlético Madrid who decided to admit him to their Cadet team. In 2008 he left the Spanish side for Italian club U.C. Sampdoria at the age of 16, he'd be promoted to the first team within a year of joining them by coach Walter Mazzarri. His first season with the Sampdoria's senior squad saw him make only 4 appearances in Serie A, the club would finish in 18th position getting relegated to Serie B. In the 2011-12 season the midfielder began to see more regular first team football, making 29 appearances in Serie B and a further 6 more in domestic cup competitions, helping the club bounce back to Serie A by winning the playoffs to gain promotion. The next three season's would see him firmly established as a first team player for Sampdoria making over 90 appearances as the club improved their league position year on year finishing 14th, 12th, and finally as high as 7th position in his last season. In June 2015 West Ham United signed the combative midfielder on a 4 year deal, he made his debut for the Hammers in August of the same year and made upwards of 20 appearances in each of the following 3 seasons in the Premier League. In the International stage the midfielder represented Spain at youth level but switched allegiances to play for Equatorial Guinea, he made his debut for Equatorial Guinea in November 2018.
