Born in Oberhausen, Germany, he began playing football at local club FC Sardegna Oberhausen before being scouted and signed by Rot-Weiß Oberhausen at the age of seven. After two years with the clubs academy he joined MSV Duisburg in 2004 and another fiver years later Schalke 04 in 2009. He progressed through the ranks and was part of the U19 side which won the 2011–12 German U-19 Championship, featuring in a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the final. The brilliant midfielder was awarded UEFA European U-17 Football Championship Golden Player, UEFA European U-17 Football Championship Top Goalscorer, and a place in the UEFA European U-17 Football Championship Team of the Tournament for his incredible performances. On 16 February 2013, the midfielder was handed his debut for the first-team, coming on as a substitute and grabbing a late assist in a 0-0 draw against Mainz 05.
