Born in Portsmouth, England, he joined Chelsea's youth academy at the age of six in 2005. The midfielder went on to play for both under-18 and under-21 teams during the 2016/17 campaign, scoring 10 goals in 30 appearances. After penning a new four-year contract with The Blues in 2017, he was sent to Dutch Eredivisie club Vitesse on a season long loan to gain experience playing regular first-team competitive football. He made his first-team debut on 26 August, as a second half substitute, as Vitesse fell to a 2–1 home defeat against AZ Alkmaar. He scored his first goal for Vitesse on 1 October in a 1–1 draw with Utrecht. On 9 May 2019, the Englishman scored his first hat-trick, during Vitesse's Eredivisie European play-off semi-final first leg win over ADO Den Haag. In the second leg, he scored again in a 2–1 win, as Vitesse won 7–3 on aggregate. He went on to feature 39 times for the Dutch side in all competitions, hitting the back of the net on 14 occasions, earning himself Vitesse Player of the Year award. On 17 July 2018, the midfielder joined EFL Championship club Derby County on a season-long loan. On 3 August 2018, he scored a 60th-minute equaliser on his debut for The Rams during a 2–1 away victory over Reading. His first senior hat-trick came in a 4–0 win over Bolton Wanderers, keeping Derby in contention for the playoffs. On 15 July 2019, he signed a new five-year deal with Chelsea. On 11 August 2019, the midfielder made his Premier League and Chelsea debut in a 0–4 defeat against Manchester United. He scored his first goal on 18 August 2019, as The Blues were held to a 1–1 draw against Leicester City.
