Born in Canning Town, East London, The Englishman started with Arsenal's academy at the age of 11, however, due to the distance from his family home to training it became impossible for him to make ends meet, so when local side West Ham United showed interest the Englishman signed for them instead, and thus began the long standing love affair. He made his Championship debut the following year helping West Ham United gain promotion to the Premier League after winning the playoffs against Preston North End, he would end the year by being awarded 'Young Hammer of the Year' award. In his 10th season at the club he was given the captain's armband. He was awarded 'Hammer of the Year' twice, the first in 2011-12 when West Ham United won promotion back to the Premier League having been relegated the year before, and a second time in the 2013-14 season.
