Born in Salto, Uruguay, he spent his youth career at Uruguayan club Nacional. He made his professional debut in the 2005/06 season, scoring 10 goals in 27 appearances. His performances caught the eye of scouts from Dutch club FC Groningen, and the striker was signed up for the following season. He would repeat a similar numbers, scoring 10 goals in 29 appearances in the Eredivisie. Dutch giants AFC Ajax saw potential in the striker and paid €7.5 million for his signature. The Uruguayan hitman would set the Eredivisie alight for de Godenzonen, scoring 111 goals and bagging 68 assists in 159 appearances. El Pistolero help Ajax to the Eredivisie title (2010/11) and KNVB Cup (2009/10). He was named Dutch Footballer of the Year (2009/10) and Ajax Player of the Year (2008/09, 2009/10). On 31January 2011, he signed for English giants Liverpool FC on a five-and-a-half year deal for a fee of £22.8 million. It is at Anfield the Uruguayan forward would blossom to one of the best player's in world football. He represented The Reds 133 times, scoring 82 goals and registering 47 assists, on route to winning Liverpool Player of the Season (2012/13, 2013/14), PFA Players' Player of the Year (2013/14) and Premier League Player of the Season (2013/14). On 11 July 2014, FC Barcelona paid a fee of €82.3 million to secure the services of the Uruguayan. In his first season at Barça, the striker formed a trident with Lionel Messi and Neymar in attack, scoring a record breaking 122 goals between them, to propel Barça to a second historic continental treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and UEFA Champions League. El Pistolero has 248 appearances of the Blaugrana, scoring 177 and assisting 96 goals on route to 11 major titles. At the international level, the striker is Uruguay's all-time leading goalscorer, and fired La Celeste to their 15th Copa America title in 2011, earning himself Player of the Tournament.
