In July of 2016 his contract at Schalke 04 expired, which meant that he moved for zero euro to Liverpool! The management in Gelschenkirchen is still traumatised by this free transfer, especially since his current market value is estimated at 20 Million Euro (17.7 Million Pound). Not bad for such a young defender!
His girlfriend is a big supporter of Liverpool, he once stated in an interview. During his injury they watched all of the Reds' games together! The two of them sat on the couch and supported as much as they could!

Joel Matip prefers to play as a centre back. He currently plays for Liverpool, but started his career in Germany. He was born to a father from Cameroon and a German mother, and spend his youth in Bochum. He started his career in the very same city for SC Weitmar 45. In 1997, at the age of six, he moved to VfL Bochum. After three years at the local professional club from his youth town, he was scouted by Schalke 04 in the summer of 2000. He made his debut for the first team of Schalke in 2009 against 1. FC Saarbrucken. His next game? Well, not against the worst team: the 'rekordmeister' FC Bayern Munich. He scored and was named man of the match. This game was the start of beautiful fairytale. In 7 years he played over 200 games for the first team of Schalke 04. In February 2016 he announced signing a pre-contract agreement to join Liverpool on a free transfer. In the summer of 2016 he made his move to Liverpool and became a player of The Reds! He made his debut in the first team of Liverpool against Burton Albion in the League Cup. So far his career at Liverpool goes with huge ups and huge downs. He was critized for his performance against Newcastle United in October 2017, being deemed at fault for the goal of Newcastle United. In March of 2018 he suffered a severe injury which ment the end of his season. In 2018-19 he is back on track, and we are very curious what this season will bring him!
