Born in Rotterdamn, Netherlands he began his youth career with the academy of local club Sparta Rotterdam. After progressing through various youth-ranks, the wingback made his first-team debut for Sparta in the Eerste Divisie (second-tier of Dutch football) on 16 January 2011, still a teenager. On 31 August 2011, Dutch Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven signed the promising youngster to a three-year deal. The Dutchman made his PSV vow on 23 October in a match against Vitesse, and scored his first professional goal over a year later against NEC. During his 5-year tenure at PSV, the Dutch destroyer appeared in 192 competitive fixtures, and totalled 12 goals and 34 assists. He was instrumental in the Dutch side’s success, as they lifted 2 Eredivisie titles (2014/15, 2015/16) and 1 KNVB Cup (2011/12). On 17 July 2017, German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt secured the Dutchman’s services for a fee of €9 million. He made 65 appearances for the German side over the next couple of seasons, including a victory over giants Bayern Munich in the 2017/18 DFB Pokal final. On 2 August 2019, the Dutch wing-back joined Premier League club Newcastle United on a season-long loan.
