Born in Birmingham, England, he joined childhood club Aston Villa’s youth academy aged six in 1995; after impressing with every age group, he was called up to the first-team while still in his early teens. To aid the youngsters development, he was loaned out to EFL One club Notts County on September 2013; the aim was for him to get opportunities of playing competitive football on a regular basis, and gain experience that comes with first-team football. He made his debut on 14 September 2013 in a 3-1 loss to MK Dons. On 7 December, he scored his first professional goal, weaving past three opposition players to hit home the third of a 3-1 win over Gillingham. The midfielder had a very fruitful spell with The Dons, yielding 12 goals and assists in 38 appearances. Upon his return to Aston Villa, the English midfielder began feature more prominently for the first-team, however, it wasn’t until Villa were relegated to the EFL Championship, did the diminutive midfielder really came in to his own. Aston Villa were relegated to the EFL Championship at the end of the 2016/16 Premier League season; and during their stay in the Championship between 2016-2019, the midfielder rose as one of England’s brightest young talent. He featured in 95 league games (including play-off fixtures), scored 14 goals and registered 19 assists. The Villains reached the EFL Championship Playoffs in back-to-back years, winning promotion to the Premier League at the second time of asking, edging out Derby County 2-1 in the 2018/19 Playoffs final.
