Player Bio

Born in Oviedo, Spain, on July 29th, 1981, Alonso came in to Formula One as a test driver for Minardi in 1999, having already been crowned Spanish National and World Carting Champion. Impressive performances in Formula 3000 saw him earn a Minardi race seat for 2001. The Spaniard would finish his rookie race in 12th position despite the glaring shortcomings of his car. In 2002, under the stewardship of Flavio Briatore, he signed for Renault. Thus began Alonso's record breaking climb to the top of the racing mountain. After replacing Jensen Button for Renault in 2003, Alonso claimed his maiden podium in Malaysia having finished in pole position during qualifying (at the time the youngest pole-seater in F1 history). El Nano finally tasted the victor's champagne at the Hungarian Grand Prix, becoming then the youngest man to win a F1 race. Nando continued his great momentum, finishing 4th in the driver's championship in 2004, and in 2005 with 7 wins he would finally clinch the F1 Driver's Championship to become the youngest world champion of his time. Alonso would repeat the feat in 2006 before moving on to McLaren and then Ferrari. There were both ups and downs, he finished runner-up in 2010, 2012 and 2013, but would always fall short of his Renault success. At the end of the 2018 season the great champion retired from Formula One having won 32 races. In 2021 Alonso announced that he'd be returning to F1 to race for Alpine-Renault.
