Hello WTFoot fans, a warm welcome to the profile of this amazing Swiss defender who currently plays for The Magpies. This lad started his youth career at FC Wil 1900, the local club from his birthplace. He played in all the representing youth teams before he made his debut in the Swiss league in November 2009 against FC Stade Nyonnais. In 2012 he made the step to Switzerland’s biggest club, FC Basel. He signed a three-year deal and became pretty fast one of the most important regulars of the first team. In his first season (2012-13) he won the Championship and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Cup, which they lost with 2-5 against Chelsea. In his second season in Basel he won the title again and played in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. And guess what.. In his third season he won the Swiss Championship AGAIN! It was for the sixth time in a row that season that FC Basel became the champion of Switzerland, a new record. He decided that it was time for a next step and signed at the German Bundesliga club Hoffenheim, for whom he played 30 games in two seasons. In the summer of 2017 it was announced that he would move to Deportivo de La Coruna – and it was there were the scouts of Newcastle United became convinced of his defensive skills. In the summer of 2018, he signed at Newcastle United after the club activated the 3 Million Pound buy out clause in his contract. He is one of the most important and strong players of Newcastle United and played a great 2018-19 BPL season.
