Emerson was born in Santos, an area of São Paolo. He started his youth career at the local club Santos in 2009 at the age of fifteen. He made his debut in the first team in 2011, when he substituted Keirrison versus Paulista for the Campeonate Paulista (3-0 win). He was in the starting eleven for the first time in January 2012, in a 1-1 draw against XV de Piracicaba. He became a regular in the very same year and was then loaned to Palermo, with a buyout clause. He played his first game in the Serie A against Napoli (3-3). He only played 9 games for them and was mainly used as being the back-up player after Achraf Lazaar. On 31 August 2015 he went on loan to Roma. He was the second choice on the right back position after Lucas Digne. In December 2016 Roma managed to buy him for 2 Million Euro. He missed the biggest part of the 2017-18 because of a ligament injury. In 2018 he surprisingly joined the English side Chelsea and signed a four-and-half-year deal at Stamford Bridge. The transfer fee involved was 20 Million Euro.
