Born in Kinshasa, DR Congo, his family fled during the Mobutu regime and emigrated to Liége, Belgium. It was in this very city that the young man started his footballing career with the youth academy of Standard Liége before moving to Genk in 2006. He would return the Walloon club as a professional footballer during the 2008/09 season and scored 3 goals in 12 matches as Les Rouges finished as champions of the Belgian Pro League. Back at Genk, the striker went on to score 16 goals and register 9 assists in 20 starts during the 2011/12 season. His impressive displays caught the attention of English club Aston Villa, the striker was subject £7 million bid and signed for the Premier League club on 31 August 2012. The Belgian forward scored on his debut as Aston Villa ran out 2-0 winners over Swansea City, this would be a taste of things to come as the striker went on to score 23 goals in 39 appearances in his debut season for The Villains. Two further seasons at Villa Park resulted in 25 goals in 62 appearances in all competitions, and a runner-up medal in the 2014/15 FA Cup which resulted in a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal. On July 2015, Liverpool secured the services of the Belgian hitman after they met his release clause of £32.5 million. The Belgian scored in just his second game for The Reds in 1-0 win over Bournemouth, however, a lack of game time due to the fact that his style didn't fit in with coach Jurgen Klopp's philosophy meant that the striker fell out of favour at Anfield. He departed after a single season, collecting runner-up medals in the Carabao Cup and the UEFA Europa League. On 20 August 2016, Crystal Palace signed the Belgian on a four-year deal for a fee of £27 million, since then the striker has scored 19 goals in 82 Premier League appearances for The Eagles.
