Born to Nigerian parents who emigrated to Italy in 1983, he was noticed by Serie A side Torino at quite a young age while playing for his local side Cassino's youth set-up. The defender would join Torino's youth team in 2002 and would eventually go on to play for the senior team at the tender age of 18, with his Serie A debut coming against Reggina. During the 2008-09 campaign Torino were relegated to Serie B, as a result the young defender started seeing more regular first team football. Over the course of the next 3 years the he'd go on to captain his side, racking up 105 appearances while helping Torino return to Serie A for the 2012-2013 season. In 2013 the Italian hard-man shocked many by signing for cross town rivals and Serie A giants Juventus. He'd go on to make 41 appearances for Juventus winning back to back Scudetto's in the 2013-14 and 2014-2015 campaign, the Supercoppa Italiana in 2013-14, and the Copa Italia in 2014-15. He made his first team debut for his national side in 2011. He was part of Italy's 23 man squad in both Euro 2012 & 2016. In July 2015 the Italian International signed for English Premier league club West Ham United. Six months later he'd go on to score his first goal for the club in dramatic fashion, a 121st minute injury time winner against Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup. In 2017 he signed a new contract with West Ham United keeping him at the club till 2022.
