The English striker signed his first professional contract with Newcastle United FC in the beginning of the 2006-07 season, making his debut in the Premier League in February of 2007. The Englishman would go on loan to Preston North End the following season in search of regular first team football, bagging a solitary goal and assist in 11 appearances. He'd return for the 2008-09 season scoring 3 goals in 14 appearances which ultimately saw Newcastle get relegated to Championship. In the Championship the striker enjoyed the best goal scoring season of his career hitting the back of the net 17 times and having a hand in a further 12 assist in 37 games, his stellar performances would catapult Newcastle back in to the Premier League for the following season. He'd retain his form and would go on to be involved in 18 goals in 19 appearances in the Premier League as Newcastle finished in 12th position. His stellar performances caught the eye of Premier League giants Liverpool who paid £35 million to secure his services making him the most expensive British footballer at the time. His Liverpool career would be largely unsuccessful with a goal tally of 11 in 58 appearances, however, he'd play two domestic cup finals in his second season at the club winning the League Cup against Cardiff City and losing to Chelsea in the FA Cup final. The Englishman went on loan to West Ham United in 2012-13 and would sign for them on a permanent deal in the following season. His West Ham career has been blighted by injuries, playing an addition of 20 games twice in 6 seasons from 2012-2018, in that time has seen a return of 39 goals in 129 games.
