Born in Leidschendam, Netherlands, he began his footballing career with the youth academy of Feyenoord in 1995 as a six year old. In the summer of 2007 he signed for Eerste Divisie club ADO Den Haag, scoring 3 goals in 33 appearances in his first season as a professional footballer. The young man's form and potential caught the eye of several Eredivisie clubs, and in the following off-season the seventeen year old signed for Dutch top-flight club SC Heerenveen. He made his debut for De Superfreizen in a Europa League match, coming on a as a second half substitute, against Hertha Berlin on 23 October 2009, the defender was sent off within three minutes of his debut but Heerenveen held out for the win. During his four season tenure at Heerenveen, the defender scored 8 goals and assisted a further 6 in 100 appearances and won the Dutch Cup. Upon expiration of his contract, the defender signed for boyhood club Feyenoord, scoring 5 goals and 11 assists in 74 appearances during two seasons at De Kuip. On 17 July 2014, the Dutchman moved to England to sign for Newcastle United on a six-year deal. His debut came in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on the opening day of the 2014/15 season. A fortnight later he scored his first goal for The Magpies in a 3-3 draw against Crystal Palace. He departed Newcastle after the club got relegated to the EFL Championship, with 69 Premier League appearances under his belt, the defender signed for Watford on 24 August 2016 for a fee of £7.5 million. Since then the Dutch defender has represented The Hornets 75 times across all competitions.
