Born in Madrid, Spain, he joined Atlético Madrid’s youth academy at eight-years of age, and graduated eight years later in 2008. After impressing during his run with Atlético Madrid B, the youngster was handed his debut 19 September 2009, featuring as a substitute in a 2-5 defeat to FC Barcelona. In February 2011, he scored his inaugural goal for the Los Rojiblancos, heading in the equalizer in an eventual 2-2 tie against Sevilla. The midfielder grew in stature every passing season, and under Diego Simeone became the heart and soul of Atleti’s midfield. Playing at the base of midfield, his qualities were custom made for starting attacking plays while providing defensive cover in a system that emphasized high-pressing and an industrious style of play. The Spaniard has featured in over 400 competitive games for Los Colchoneros, contributing 40 goals and 98 assists. In the 2013/14 La Liga campaign, he featured in 36 of 38 league fixtures as Atlético Madrid prevailed over established powers in Real Madrid and FC Barcelona to capture their first title in two decades. An invaluable cog of Simeone’s system, his efforts have helped Los Rojiblancos to two UEFA Champions League finals, albeit finishing runners-up to cross city rivals Real Madrid on both occasions. Furthermore he has powered Atleti to the 2017/18 Europa League and 2018 UEFA Super Cup title. He was made club captain after Uruguayan defender Diego Godin’s departure in the summer of 2019. On the international he has represented Spain on 43 occasions, starting in the 2014 & 2018 editions of the FIFA World Cup.
